Notes
"Music as synaesthesia is something that Saint Etienne excel at and while some of the reviews at the time never picked up on the mental images that the group held in their collective head - Japan (Clock Milk), Spain (the Rush sampling Conchita Martinez, their tribute to Shut Up And Dance), outer space (the Detroit techno influenced Junk The Morgue where Sarah Whispers 'kiss the future') - they, nevertheless, were quick to praise what they heard and what it evoked for them" (So Tough Deluxe Edition 2009)

"Conchita Martinez was a clay court tennis player. I think she won Wimbledon the year after the album came out. Not that I'm saying we're psychic. It was Martina Navratilova's last Wimbledon and Conchita beat her in the final." (Bob Stanley 2020)

We were aiming for a cut-and-shut Shut Up And Dance production on this. Another big influence. Their records still sound incredible. (Bob Stanley 2020)

Three Sets of Samples

Sample 1 (Betweek Clock Milk & Conchita Martinez)
"Say What Girl"; "Daddy Can I Go To The Hop"
Sampled from Eddie Jones and The Cashmeres song Daddy Can I Go To The Hop (Say What?) from 1959

Sample 2 Conchita Martinez samples guitar from the song Spirit Of Radio by Canadian band Rush. Word is that Rush okayed the use but wondered why Saint Etienne wanted to ruin their lovely song with Rush's guitar.

The Spirit of Radio sampled under licence from Polygram Special Markets, a division of Polygram Group Distribution, Inc. The Spirit of Radio (C) 1980 Core Music Publishing. All Rights Reserved.

Sample 3 (At end of Conchita Martinez)
Voice 1: "Maybe he means it's some sort of ghost"
Vocie 2: "Maybe that's what the beast is - a ghost"

The sample at the end of Concita Martinez is taken from the 1963 film 'Lord of the Flies'
