Deborah Wykes & Paul Kelly met while touring the world with Saint Etienne as part of their backing band in the late part of 1992, a fruitful partnership ensued and following a 7" release on the seminal US label Summershine in 1997, Birdie were signed to the newly formed It Records. An album, good enough to charm the birds from the trees was released in 1999. A second one followed in 2001.

Prior to her involvement in Saint Etienne Debsey was in the groups Dolly Mixture and Coming Up Roses. She has also provided vocals for songs by the Pogues, Idha, Les Hommes, Campag Velocet, and Kitty Finer. Prior to his involvement with Saint Etienne Paul Kelly was in the band East Village with his brother Martin who is Saint Etienne's manager. Martin and Paul are responsible for all the going ons at Heavenly Films.
